The role of the S-3 is:

To plan and execute artillery support for 1st Marine Division, to include organization for combat, targeting/counter-battery radar operations, command and control, and positioning of fire support assets. To lead the planning of regimental training operations and exercises and support the planning and execution of battalion and battery level operations. Develop the annual regimental training plan. Guide the survey, meteorological, and radar efforts of the regiment. Manage the regimental TEEP and provide the commanding officer recommendations on regimental support to operational commitments. Refine and publish the regimental standard operating and safety procedures. Standardize and publish written guidance on pre-deployment training for the regiment's batteries, detachments and individual augments."
